What is the difference between a “service rated” automatic transfer switch and a "standard transfer" switch?

A service rated transfer switch must be installed if there is no breaker or disconnect between the utility feed and the transfer switch. However, if there is a breaker or disconnect switch between the utility feed and the transfer switch, a service rated switch is not required.
